A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), conducted by Christian Thielemann. With Christine Schäfer (soprano), Christian Gerhaher (baritone), the Chorus of the Bavarian Radio and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Recorded in April 2007 at the Munich Philharmonic Hall. In a radical departure from the traditional Catholic Requiem Mass, Brahms compiled his text from Martin Luther's German translation of the Bible. The words convey feelings of hope and consolation, and are more concerned with comforting the living than praying for the soul of the departed.
