Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 4 in G major. Anna Prohaska (soprano), Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra; conductor: Mariss Jansons. One of Amsterdam's immutable traditions is the Christmas matinee concert (Kerstmatinee) given by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. This most popular event is held every year on the 25th of December at the Concertgebouw, the concert hall after which the orchestra is named. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, founded in 1888, is widely regarded as the one of the leading orchestras in the world. The Austrian composer and conductor Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) led the traditional symphonic genre into the 20th century. His Fourth Symphony combines, like its predecessors, the orchestral sound with singing.
