From the Zurich Opera House: "Il ritorno d’Ulisse" (The Return of Ulisses) by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. With Werner Hollweg (Ulisses), Trudeliese Schmidt (Penelope), Francisco Araiza (Telemaco), Philippe Huttenlocher (Eumete), Janet Perry (Melanto), the Chorus of the Opera Zurich and the Monteverdi Ensemble. The Zurich Monteverdi Cycle was "one of the most exciting opera events in a long time" (Die Zeit). It marked the beginning of the Monteverdi Renaissance that continues to the present day. Years of intensive study by conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt - not only of the transmitted scores but also of the instruments used in Monteverdi's time - were necessary to provide a basis for the exceptionally high standard of the Zurich productions.
