In 2023, the International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition, in which young string quartets and piano trios from all over the world compete, will take place for the eighth time. The competition, which has been held since 2001, has developed into one of the largest and most important competitions on the young international chamber music scene to date.
In addition to its reputation, considerable prize money - donated by renowned institutions, friends and partners of the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna itself - provides the incentive for the best young ensembles to take on this competition.
The focus is, of course, on the namesake himself: Joseph Haydn, founder of Viennese Classicism and "father" of chamber music. To interpret Haydn skillfully and worthily is one of the greatest challenges for young professional ensembles. In addition to the chamber music oeuvre of its namesake, the competition also deliberately places a special emphasis on chamber music works of the Viennese Classical period and the Second Viennese School. The emphasis is on a contemporary interpretive approach and on building bridges between these two epochs. In addition, there is a further focus on the promotion of contemporary music. This aspect is particularly taken into account by the composition competition held in cooperation with the Institute for Composition, Electroacoustics and Tonmeister Training at our university, whose winning compositions are included in the compulsory repertoire of the competition.
