World-class soprano Anna Netrebko and all-round musical phenomenon Daniel Barenboim tackle the songs of Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky – little known Russian gems in a variety of styles and genres. Netrebko has the warm, velvety timbre, the mellow lower range, the incredible pianissimi and, above all, the Russian soul that are needed to let these songs exert their full impact. At the piano, Daniel Barenboim is subtle and delicate, providing the forceful yet unobtrusive background for the mini-dramas being related by his partner. "Has anyone ever heard her sing more beautifully than on this evening in the Philharmonie?", wrote the Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel.
