Markus Werba is young, good-looking, talented and popular - the exact opposite of the frustrated Sixtus Beckmesser of Wagner's Meistersingern von Nürnberg. Nevertheless he brilliantly perfomed the role in Stefan Herheim's inventive Salzburg production and with Daniele Gatti as his conductor. Barbara Rett talked with Markus Werba about the few Austrians of the international opera scene, Richard Wagner's anti-Semitism and climbing in the mountains of Carinthia.
