The Salzburg Marionette Theatre is one of the most traditional puppet theatres in the world.
The particularly detailed style of performance was recognised by UNESCO in 2016 as an intangible cultural heritage (Austria, national list). The repertoire of the theatre, founded in 1913, includes well-known opera productions, plays, ballets and fairy tales on the one hand, but also contemporary productions and cooperations with leading cultural partners and artists.
The ensemble consists of ten puppeteers who are trained in a wide variety of crafts. They are characterised by musicality, great empathy and the highest dexterity. With these skills, they succeed in breathing life into the most diverse characters on stage and in creating a highly realistic human image.
All marionettes are made by the ensemble members themselves in the theatre according to the ideas and designs of a director and the set team. 20 to 90 puppets are used in the individual productions and some of them are led by several players at the same time. More than 700 small performers are currently "engaged" at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, but the troupe is far more extensive.
A performance at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre is a unique experience. Hardly anyone can escape the magic of the perfectly guided figures, the fantastic stage designs and the musical setting. It is a pleasure to dive into another world - full of wonder and illusion.
