On 29 May 2014 the Vienna Philharmonic played for the eleventh time in the park of Schönbrunn Palace. Despite heavy rainfall in the afternoon and cool temperatures in the evening, 43,000 people attended the traditional "Schönbrunn Summer Night Concert", which was a tribute to Richard Strauss, born on 11 June 1864. The musical regent of the year was featured with his "Burlesque" and the tone poem " Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche". The rest of the programme consisted of works by two composers whom Strauss particularly admired: Hector Berlioz (overture "Le Carnaval Romain" as well as overture to the opera "Benvenuto Cellini") and Franz Liszt (symphonic poem "Mazeppa"). Encores were the waltz "Wiener Blut" op. 354 and the "Furioso-Polka" op. 260 by Johann Strauß. The soloist of the "Burleske" was Lang Lang, who had already performed in this setting in 2005, while Christoph Eschenbach conducted for the first time at Schönbrunn.
