This time the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Russian conductor Valery Gergiev and its guest star Anna Netrebko invite you to a balmy summer night with Italian sounds in the park of Schönbrunn Palace. The programme offers Italianità at its finest, with excerpts from works by Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, Cilea, Tchaikovsky, Leoncavallo and Mascagni to Nino Rota. This year's programme, which has the motto "A balmy summer night with Italian sounds", includes works from opera and ballet with a reference to Italy, thus underlining the central role that the repertoire of the Vienna State Opera plays in the life of the orchestra, even when it appears as a philharmonic orchestra. You can hear excerpts from works by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Gioacchino Rossini, Francesco Cilea, Piotr I. Tchaikovsky, Ruggero Leoncavallo and Pietro Mascagni. As encores at the end of the concert there are traditionally Viennese popular songs, including the waltz "Wiener Blut" by Johann Strauss son.
