As one of the musical highlights in Marseille, in the year of being the European capital of culture, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra was invited to perform at the Opéra de Marseille. Alongside some of the most famous overtures and preludes by Giuseppe Verdi, the orchestra performs Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, a work that is not only one of the most popular works of the concert literature, but also a work the orchestra has already been praised for in the press: “No doubt: this is one of the most exciting versions of Symphonie Fantastique I have ever heard. Barenboim depicts Berlioz’s pathological sensitivity in a sumptuous and electrifying performance.” (Remy Franck, Pizzicato). Berlioz’s popular symphony “is revealed as the groundbreaking masterpiece it is, beautifully presented with incisive élan and detail” (BBC Music Magazine). This performance once more demonstrates the uniqueness of the orchestra, combining pure joy of playing and musical perfection: “An exceptional evening of music that seduces the ears” (La Provence).

Founded in 1999 by Daniel Barenboim and the Palestinian author Edward Said, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra comprises musicians – teenagers and young adults up to the age of 25 –from Israel, the Arab states and Spain, and hence from the Jewish, Muslim and Christian faiths. The orchestra is a regular guest on the most important stages and festivals of the world. This concert was part of the Festival International de Piano de la Roque d'Anthéron.
