Considered one of the world's leading specialists of Baroque music, Nikolaus Harnoncourt (1929-2016) founded the "Concentus Musicus Wien" in 1953. It has since become one of the world's most respected ensembles specializing in the performance of early music on original instruments or faithful reproductions. This recording with Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus Wien was made in July 1984 in the library of the Ochsenhausen Abbey in Southern Germany. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) himself referred to his four orchestral suites as "overtures" because the first movement dominates the entire work.
