Every year, the ancient Roman Théâtre antique d'Orange serves as a picturesque setting for operas and concert performances at the Chorégies d'Orange festival, founded in Provence in 1869. Equipped with almost 7000 seats and unique acoustics, this Roman theatre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
The theatre now offers its breathtaking ambience for George Bizet's world-famous love drama Carmen. The leading roles are played by the spectacular Kate Aldrich, in her parade role as charming seductress Carmen and star tenor Jonas Kaufmann as restless and jealous army officer, Don José. "Aldrich turns Carmen into a magical figure through her liveliness." Opera Today writes about Aldrich making her festival debut. The rest of the cast is not less outstanding- especially Inva Mula as Micaëla and Kyle Ketelsen as Escamillo, who delights the audience through his wit and playfulness.
Mikko Franck conducts the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.
Louis Désiré, through a successful interplay of direction, stage design and costumes, creates a naturalistic image of society that corresponds ideally with Bizet's intentions.
