Boston Symphony Orchestra, conductor: Leonard Bernstein. Recorded at Tanglewood in July 1972. Located in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts, Tanglewood is one of the world's most beloved music festivals and serves as the summer home for the famed Boston Symphony Orchestra. Before the first performance of the Fourth Symphony 1885 in Meiningen the great conductor Hans von Bülow related: "Just back from rehearsal. No. 4 gigantic, absolutely original, completely new, robustly individual. Breathes incomparable energy from A to Z." The high rank of Brahms' Fourth is undisputed today.
