The Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons, born in 1943 in Riga, studied Music in Leningrad and continued his musical education with Hans Swarowsky and Herbert von Karajan. In 1971 he won the Karajan Competition in Berlin. As successor to Lorin Maazel he became in September 2003 Chief Conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich. In addition to this, he has been Chief Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam since 2004. Mariss Jansons was awarded the renowned Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2013.
