From the Vienna State Opera: "The Nutcracker". Music by Peter Tchaikovsky, choreography by Rudolf Nureyev; conductor: Paul Connelly. With Liudmila Konovalova (Marie) and Vladimir Shishov (Drosselmeier/Prince). Nureyev created his choreography of this classic 1985 for the Paris Opera Ballet which he led at that time as director. He was referring more to E.T.A. Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" than the first performance in 1892 in St. Petersburg. The young girl Clara who dreams at Christmas of the transformation of the Nutcracker into a man is in Nureyev's choreography almost all the time on stage. She is developing from a child to a teenager and a woman. Nureyev's choreography deftly alternates between dream and reality. It has a lot of classic elegance, but also humorous scenes.
