From the Alto Adige Festival, Dobbiaco: "Alzira" by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901). Concert performance. Conductor: Gustav Kuhn. With Francesco Facini (Alvaro), Thomas Gazheli (Gusmano), Ferdinand von Bothmer (Zamoro), Junko Saito (Alzira). Verdi's eighth opera, premiered in 1845 in Naples, is based on Voltaire's tragedy "Alzire, ou Les Américaines" that several composers of the 19th Century have set to music. Verdi wrote beautiful melodies and enthralling dramatic music to the plot about the conflict between Incas and Spaniards in Peru - again and again the genius of the master can be heard.
