Jazz reinterpretations of classic art songs by mathias rüegg & Lia Pale
Schubert’s incomparable settings of Wilhelm Müller’s 24 poems gestated in the musical imaginations of Lia Pale and mathias rüegg for six long years. Finally they plucked up the courage to give these pieces a fresh interpretation in the jazz tradition. Their flair and sensitivity has allowed them not only to mine the riches of Schubert’s Lieder, but also to bring out the power that lies within them.
“There is magic within these Lieder” affirms Lia Pale. “No matter how long I’ve been performing them, no matter how many times I sing them, they always hold some new surprise for me. I would have loved to have listened to Schubert at the piano, playing and singing his Lieder to a small group of friends in the middle of Vienna. I hope he would have enjoyed my version of his little gatherings.” mathias rüegg puts particular value on Schubert’s harmonic range and his melodic sense. “His “Wegweiser” is incredible. You can find half of the Great American Songbook contained within it”, says rüegg.
