Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): Johannespassion (St. John Passion), BWV 245. Conductor: Nikolaus Harnoncourt. With Kurt Equiluz (Evangelist), Robert Holl (Jesus), Thomas Moser (tenor), Anton Scharinger (bass), the Tölz Boys' Choir and the Concentus Musicus Wien. Recorded in June 1985 in Graz Cathedral (Austria). Bach led the first performance at the Good Friday services in 1724 at St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig, where he had become music director and cantor of the Thomasschule. From a stylistic point the St. John Passion surpasses all other passions by Bach's predecessors and contemporaries. The ingenious form concept and the magnificent architectural structure elevate the work to a high point of Sacred Music.
