The "St. Matthew Passion" depicts the Passion of Jesus as it appears in the 26th and 27th chapters of the Gospel. Bach composed this - in his own words - "great Passion music" for the Good Friday Vespers of 1727. For the three-hour oratorio, which was premiered in Leipzig's Thomaskirche, interrupted by a long sermon, Thomaskantor Bach provided two orchestras and choral groups to witness the events surrounding Jesus' crucifixion. The soloists, for their part, appear as biblical figures who reflect in arias the events from the Gospel of Matthew.
