Benjamin Britten chose the legend of the folk hero Paul Bunyan as the material for his first opera. In this brilliant operetta in two acts, the fascinating pioneer era in North America comes to life again. At the center of the story is a group of lumberjacks, led by a giant of a man. Paul Bunyan is a mythical figure of superhuman size. Where men are still real men, a fierce battle rages for power and success, for life and love. Paul Bunyan was written in 1941 in collaboration with the poet W.H. Auden and may rightly be seen as a pioneer of the modern Broadway musical. The music in Paul Bunyan reflects a wide variety of American styles, including folk songs, country and western, blues and hymns. Britten and Auden, who fled Europe before the Second World War, created a worthy monument to their new homeland here.
