The Vienna Philharmonic and Christian Thielemann are engaged in a real mammoth project: the joint recording of the entire Bruckner symphony cycle until the grand Bruckner Year of 2024. After Symphonies Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 8, this long-standing, congenial partnership of conductor and orchestra is now devoted to Bruckner's 5th Symphony, which the composer himself called the "Fantastic" or his "contrapuntal masterpiece." Along with the Eighth, the Fifth is one of his most monumental symphonies.
