Hengelbrock and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, who are celebrating the spirit of Romanticism here, are joined by pianist extraordinaire Evgeny Kissin for Liszt’s First Piano Concerto. “Clear and light-footed”
(NRC) is the conductor’s performance of Berlioz’ overture. He creates a chamber music atmosphere for the Piano Concerto, allowing the soloist to enter a musical conversation with a clarinet, then two violins and then again with the orchestra. Here, Kissin is clearly in his element, “like a fish in water!” (NRC)
