Zorika’s engagement with Jonel is imminent. But it is actually Jonel’s half-brother, the spirited gypsy fiddler Jószi, who has her smitten. She’d like nothing better than to elope with him. At a loss about whom she should choose, Zorika remembers the old folk belief that if a maiden drinks water from the Czerna River on the evening of her engagement she will be able to look into the future. She takes a drink and falls asleep, dreaming of the life awaiting her if she chooses Jószi. On awakening, she is relieved to realize that everything was just a dream. She recognizes her true feelings and knows she belongs to Jonel.
