On occasion of the celebration of the 200-year anniversary of Salzburg’s affiliation with Austria, the Salzburg Festival will present one of the masterworks of sacred music performed at the place of origin. The Missa Salisburgensis by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber will be performed at the Salzburg Cathedral in a series of concerts which illustrate a heyday of sacred music in Salzburg and illuminate the strong connections between the greatest of the city’s composers. Composed in 1682 to commemorate the 1100-year anniversary of the Diocese of Salzburg, the Missa Salisburgensis was conceived in the style of Venetian polyphony in order to impressively highlight the acoustic advantages of Salzburg’s Cathedral. Further on the program are sacred works by Claudio Monteverdi. The renowned Collegium 1704 is playing under the baton of Václav Luks.
