In his "Don Quixote", Richard Strauss (1864-1949) describes in ten variations the psychological structure of the Knight of the Rueful Countenance and his servant with a rich palette of orchestral resources: The knight of La Mancha himself is portrayed by the solo cello; Sancho Panza, his lumbering and voluble peasant servant, by a bass clarinet, tenor tuba, piccolo and solo viola. The work was first performed in Cologne in 1898 and immediately won over the audience with its dazzling programmatic tone painting.
