From the Bayreuth Festival: "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) by Richard Wagner (1813-1883). Conductor: Horst Stein - Stage director: Wolfgang Wagner. With Bernd Weikl (Hans Sachs), Siegfried Jerusalem (Walther von Stolzing), Hermann Prey (Sixtus Beckmesser), Graham Clark (David), Mari Anne Häggander (Eva), Manfred Schenk (Veit Pogner). Wolfgang Wagner's universally praised production dispenses with usual clichés and excessive pathos and concentrates on the specifically human aspect of the characters. Wagner has succeeded in liberating "Die Meistersinger" from its aura of Teutonic heaviness and retrieving the light and color of the original: late medieval Nuremberg truly comes to life.
